Which Guitar And Amp?

I have been playing electric and acoustic guitar now for aroung 6 months and have decided I am ready to begin collecting my money to replace my Fender Squier due to the fact that it has limited capabilites and doesn't have the best sound quality. i have been looking at guitars am ideally wishing to purchase one which I won't need to replace and will suit my needs for the coming years. After a little research I found that many of my favorite artists use the Fender Telecaster guitar. What is the difference between a Tele and a Strat or Squier. The music I play is mostly Snow Patrol, O.A.R., and other music of the sort. I also need an amp, preferrably with distortion capabilites and good sound quality. I am not a performer so a large amp isn't necessary (my 15w gets me by) but I know I probably won't find these capabilites in such a small amp. My max budget is $1,000 but I would like to spend less oboviously. Currently I am leaning towards a 72 Telecaster Deluxe.
