Info about New Star Ocean Game?

I was thinking of getting the newest Star Ocean game that is coming out on the 360, but I've never played Star Ocean before. So I was wondering if this series of games is a continuous storyline, or if each new installment is a new story, sort of like the Final Fantasy series, where each game has totally new worlds, characters, stories etc...
