Do authors favor their own country over others in books?

Like why Stephanie Meyer set Twilight in Forks, Washington, U.S.A.? or Why did J.K. Rowling set Harry Potter in Britian? I get it if they can picture the countryside or nature better than somewhere else. (Don't be a smart and say 'Because they could')
