yze this male? I don't understand him?

So there is this guy I like(d). I hit on him and got his number. We went out to dinner and had a great long talk with lots of connection, and I could tell he really liked me. Eventually we ended up hooking up but nothing major just some kissing and whatnot and I told him I was looking for a relationship. He said he had to think about it. So he stopped by my dorm a week later and told me he didn't want a relationship and hoped we could still be friends. I said that was fine and I hoped to talk to him soon, but he stopped contacting me. He actually tried to avoid me. I let him do what he wanted and didn't try to run after him, but a couple weeks later he came up to one of my friends and drunkenly told her that he regretted what he said about not wanting a relationship with me and that he was shocked that I wasn't jealous and didn't try harder to be with him. Then he told her he was afraid I didn't like him as much as he thought I did and that he would have to talk to me before deciding whether or not to date me. He also told her he really didn't want a relationship, but he really liked me. So he asked me to dinner, but never followed through and has been steadily avoiding me more and more. I'm not interested in this guy anymore because of his jerky ways, but I just don't understand this behavior, why does he have to be silly about this? Why can't we just stay friends?
