Why has whipping oneself, hairshirts and extreme starvation gone out of fashion in christianity?

I believe hairshirts are still worn. Opus Deii still do things like this don' they .And in the Muslim religion some Shia whip themselves on a particular day of the year in the streets I seem to remember.
