Patent help???

I have an invention that I would like to research, but have no idea where to start. Everytime I get into any research, I am completely baffled & confused. I do not want to call any of the "inventors hotlines" for fear of being ripped off. I do understand that I will have to make some sort of investment, but again, dont want to lose out to a scam.
